Introduction to “Greater Than”

Math was never my favorite subject growing up. I could handle the basics—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. But once the letters and symbols started showing up, things got fuzzy. Algebra, geometry, trigonometry… it all felt like a foreign language. And honestly, it wasn’t the numbers that tripped me up. It was the symbols.

I remember staring at the simplest ones, trying to make sense of them. The equal sign? No problem. But then came the two that seemed determined to confuse me: > and <. For the longest time, I couldn’t keep them straight. Eventually, it clicked. The wide‑open side pointed toward the greater number. The narrow side pointed toward the lesser.

A simple symbol. A simple idea.
But one that carries a truth far bigger than math class.

Whether we realize it or not, each of us is living our lives between those two symbols. Every day, we decide what is greater and what is lesser. What deserves our attention and what doesn’t. What we trust and what we ignore. What we build our life on and what we walk away from.

And that is where the book of Hebrews speaks with power.

A Book Many Know—But Few Understand

Hebrews is one of those books people have heard of but rarely dive into. It’s rich, deep, and layered with meaning. As I was preparing for a sermon series on Hebrews, one phrase kept jumping out at me: “greater than.” It captured the heartbeat of the entire book.

Hebrews teaches us that Jesus is greater than anything or anyone else—greater than angels, greater than Moses, greater than the priests, greater than the sacrifices, greater than the covenant, greater than the  sacrificial system, greater than the shadows that pointed to Him.

And because Jesus is greater, He becomes the key to a life that is “greater than”—
greater than what the world offers,
greater than what we can produce on our own,
greater than the limitations we place on ourselves.

This book is an invitation to live a “Greater Than” life.

Some Background on Hebrews?

Before we walk through the chapters, it helps to understand the audience. Hebrews wasn’t written to a specific church like Corinth or Ephesus. It was written to a group of Jewish believers—men and women who had grown up with the Old Testament, the sacrificial system, the priesthood, and the traditions of their ancestors.

They knew the rituals.
They knew the Scriptures.
They knew the promises.

But now they had come to know Jesus—the fulfillment of everything they had been taught. And they were struggling.

Some were drifting.
Some were discouraged.
Some were tempted to go back to what felt familiar.

The writer of Hebrews—whose identity remains uncertain to Bible scholars—steps in with a message that is both pastoral and urgent:

Don’t go back. Don’t drift. Don’t settle. Jesus is greater and He wants you to live “greater than” you ever thought possible.

Whether the author was Paul, Barnabas, Apollos, or someone else, one thing is clear: he understood the Jewish faith deeply and understood Jesus even more deeply. He wanted his fellow believers to remain faithful to the One who fulfilled every promise God ever made.

Why Hebrews Matters Today

You don’t have to look far to see that the issues Hebrews addresses are still with us. People drifting from faith. Worship becoming optional. Spiritual growth taking a back seat. Since 2016, the number of Americans who never attend church has risen sharply, while weekly attendance continues to decline.

The pressures are different, but the pull is the same.
The distractions are new, but the drift is old.

The world still offers a thousand lesser things and calls them “greater.”

Hebrews calls us back.

Back to clarity.
Back to conviction.
Back to Christ.

At the end of the book, the writer tells us exactly why he wrote it:

“May he equip you with all you need for doing his will… I urge you… to pay attention to what I have written in this brief exhortation.” (Hebrews 13:21–22 NLT)

God wants His people equipped.
Strengthened.
Anchored.
Growing.
Faithful.

And that happens through Jesus—the One who is “greater than.”

Where We Begin

So where do we start when we want to become greater than we are?

Not with self‑help.
Not with willpower.
Not with trying harder.

We start with the One who is greater.

This study is an invitation to walk through Hebrews together and discover how Jesus reshapes our understanding of faith, endurance, worship, and life itself. My prayer is that as you read, you will not only learn about the greatness of Jesus—you will experience it.

Let’s begin the journey toward a life that is truly “Greater Than!”
